Johannesburg metro police have nabbed a man travelling at 244km/h - the second highest speed recorded since the holidays started on December 1, 2005.
The man, who is in his 30s, was driving a Mercedes-Benz and was caught on the N1 highway near the Grasmere Plaza toll gate about 9:15pm on Wednesday night.
Apparently a businessman from Virginia in the Free State, the motorist told metro police officers he was speeding because he was on his way to see his girlfriend in Ekurhuleni.
"It looks like he had an argument with his girlfriend over the phone and was going to meet her at her place in Kempton Park," said metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.
The driver was taken to Mondeor police station, where he spent the night.
Johannesburg's top speedster during the festive season was also in his 30s. He was caught doing 251km/h in a Lamborghini on the N14 highway between Krugersdorp and Pretoria.
